Is there a saltwater fish that holds a broader appeal to the South African fly angler than the noble Garrick? We think not. Affectionally known as a ‘leerie’ for leerfish (Lichia amia), feisty, yet forgiving it’s the game fish that gets so many hooked on saltwater fly fishing and then continues to allure forever — there is always a bigger one to target. It’s been called ‘the gentleman of the ocean’ but we feel that is unjust. We think has the qualities of a Duke - royal and stately, yet with an air of arrogance…While it fights clean, a proper-sized leerie can be a true badass and cunning to boot — very tricky to pin on fly. This is a tribute to the South African saltwater fly-angler’s spirit animal, the wave was inspired by famed Japanese artist, Hokusai and the rendition of Slangkop Lighthouse serves as a beacon of light and symbolises the fact that the leerie roams our entire coast.
