Tuscan Bunny

Originally crafted by Drew Chicone for species like snook and tarpon, the Tuscan Bunny has proven highly effective for Largemouth Yellowfish in South African waters—especially in regions like the Richtersveld. With a few adaptations, this pattern continues to deliver outstanding results.

Adaptations for Largemouth Yellowfish:

Design & Materials: The fly retains its signature asymmetrical foam head and rabbit strip tail, creating lifelike movement and significant water disturbance—perfect for enticing Largemouth Yellowfish.
Color Variations: While the original pattern features darker tones like dark gray (chinchilla) bodies with black heads, anglers targeting Largies have found success with various local baitfish colors. The most effective shades tend to be Black, Olive, and Tan.

Fishing Techniques:

Retrieval: Use a combination of short, sharp strips to imitate an injured baitfish, followed by pauses to trigger aggressive strikes

Go Too Minnow (Muishond Family of Patterns)

A staple in South African fly fishing, the Muishond streamer pattern is renowned for its ability to attract Largemouth and Smallmouth Yellowfish. Designed for lifelike movement and visual appeal, this pattern has earned its place in the arsenal of many seasoned anglers.

Design & Materials:

Tail: Features a zonker strip in black, olive, or tan, providing natural movement in the water.
Body: Made with white marabou and gold flash, enhancing visibility and mimicking local baitfish.
Head: Built from deer belly hair in shades of olive, black, natural, white, or orange, adding buoyancy and a realistic profile.
Eyes: Equipped with Ufudu real eye dumbbells (4-5mm), helping the fly sink and adding a natural look.

Fishing Techniques:

The Muishond excels in both river systems and still waters, whether swung through current seams or stripped across deeper pools.
Retrieval: A mix of short strips and pauses mimics a distressed baitfish, triggering predatory strikes.

MSP (Muddler Sculpin Pattern)

The MSP has been a go-to pattern for Largemouth Yellowfish in the Vaal River for decades. Developed specifically for trophy fish—some exceeding 20 pounds—this fly is designed to swim effectively while reducing snags by riding hook-point up.

Body: Incorporates a subtle flash, adding to the profile.
Head: Designed for proper swimming action while minimizing snags.
